6 Tips to Thrive in the Year of the Fire Rooster

Happy Lunar Year of the Fire Rooster!

This year is known as the Year of the Red Rooster.
I know what you may be thinking… “Wasn’t last year the year of the fire monkey? Oh no, not another ‘fire year’!”
Yes, it’s going to be another hot and intense year according to the traditional Chinese horoscope.
The 2016 ‘fire monkey‘, left many people surprised, anxious and upset.  Thankfully, this year will be relatively more yin.
In the Chinese horoscope, the five elements go through a cycle for two years each.  Last year was yang fire, and this year will be a yin fire.  2018 will be yang earth, 2019 yin earth, then to yang metal, and so on…
I was not surprised at all when Donald Trump won the US presidency in a fire monkey year.  In fact, last summer when I was visiting my American cousins, they asked me who I thought was going to win the election based on the Chinese horoscope.  I knew without a doubt that Donald Trump had the Asian horoscopes on his side – because he’s tricky and smart like a monkey and proud and loud like a rooster.

Good for Donald Trump, but what does the Red Rooster bring to You?

The Rooster is connected with metal, and fire melts metal according to the Chinese five phases theory, so expect a lot of opposing and polarising forces at play this year.
The Rooster is the leader and protector of the roost, ie: home.  He finds a high perch and spends most of his time there surveying and defending his territory, and leading his family to the best sources of nourishment.
“I remember, as a kid, I’d follow the rooster
and the chickens and watch what type of grass they’d eat.  And me and my friends would eat that grass, like that was our lunch.”

– Adam Beach
As you observe the boundaries of your territory this year, you will see a lot of other roosters all clucking and crowing.  Some of them may challenge your boundaries.  Others will distract you with their loud crowing and impressive feathers.  Some may help you.
One of the biggest challenges in a fire rooster year, is knowing which roosters to give your attention to.  When in doubt, turn your attention inwards.

Yin Fire Corresponds to the Heart.

According to Chinese medicine, what they call the “shen” is the mind, the spirit, the awareness and the vitality of a person.  Whenever we diagnose patients using TCM, it’s always important to assess the “shen“.  This is particularly important for patients with mental health, insomnia, stress or heart related issues.
“The mind (shen) is rooted in the blood of the heart.”
-Chinese medicine theory
Yin fire corresponds to the heart organ, which is called the Emperor in Chinese medicine.  The heart is the ruler of all the other organs and systems.  Mental health is dependent on the health of the heart as well.
The rooster struts tall and proud with his heart forward, and his voice loud.
Being a yin fire rooster year, it is very important that you listen to your heart – especially in the realms of relationships and personal boundaries.
Being a fire year, expect your patience and compassion to be challenged at times.  You will have many opportunities to burn out by getting too emotionally upset with circumstances beyond your control.
Fire years can be passionate, intense, consuming and unpredictable.   So it’s important to pace yourself, let got of the things holding you back, and choose your battles wisely.  Here’s six tips to harness the fire rooster year in your favour…

6 Tips for a Successful Fire Rooster Year

Focus your energy on nurturing your own roost.  Prioritise on expanding and cultivating your territory within.  This means your family, your home, your body and  your health.
This year favours enhancing your cardiovascular, respiratory, emotional and mental health.
This year also favours the brave and proud, but arrogance and fake confidence will not carry much weight.
The rooster is considered very honest and perceptive, lies and trickery will be revealed for what they are.  The Rooster is an animal of Perception, Courage, Resilience and Fertility.  The roosters primary purpose is to use these strengths to protect and nurture his hens and offspring.
The Rooster is a feisty and brave animal.  A natural fighter, they are bred and trained in many countries to compete in rooster fights.  But roosters will only fight if another rooster or predictor threatens him or his territory.

Expect a little push-back from competitors and rivals this year.
The rooster is honest and perceptive, but not deceptive.  He doesn’t use trickery like the monkey did last year.   Frauds and scams will be less convincing this year.
People will be extra perceptive and critical.  Your bosses, supervisors, clients, and customers will all expect higher standards.
